New countertops in an Aurora kitchen are the tidiest scope in a remodel when the cabinets underneath are sound and level. The boxes stay, the doors stay, and the surface on top is replaced along with the sink cut-out. Countertop replacement: what stays and what moves

The cabinets stay, and they matter more than they look, because a countertop is only as flat as the boxes it sits on. Cabinets that are out of level, sagging or water-damaged have to be fixed before a stone top goes on. If that turns out to be most of them, the job is really new kitchen cabinets in Aurora, CO rather than new counters alone.

What moves in a straight replacement is the plumbing at the sink. The faucet and sink are disconnected so the old top can come off, then reconnected once the new one is set. A new top is also the natural moment to change the sink itself, for example from a drop-in sink that sits on the counter to an undermount sink fastened below it, like the one in the photograph. Quartz countertops in Aurora

What is sold as quartz is an engineered stone: crushed quartz held together with resin and pigment. HomeGuide describes it as about 90 percent natural quartz and 10 percent resins and pigments, and Caesarstone, one of the makers, says its surfaces contain up to 90 percent quartz. OSHA and NIOSH give a wider spread across the industry, saying engineered stone can be up to 95 percent crystalline silica "with resins, pigments, and adhesives making up the rest," while some products contain far less.

The resin is what makes quartz easy to live with and also what limits it. Caesarstone describes its surfaces as highly nonporous and non-absorbent, and its care guide asks for warm soapy water, a cutting board and a trivet under anything hot. It calls quartz heat resistant but not heat proof, since very hot cookware can burn the resin.

Granite countertops and other natural stone

Granite, quartzite and marble are cut from quarried stone, so no two slabs match, and part of the job is choosing the actual slab rather than a sample of it. HomeGuide notes that quartzite, despite the similar name, is a 100 percent natural stone and not an engineered one. Natural stone can be sealed against staining, and HomeGuide prices a sealant treatment at $200 to $350.

The OSHA and NIOSH hazard alert on countertop work lists typical crystalline silica content by stone. The spread is wider than most people expect, and it is the reason every stone surface is regulated in the shop, not only quartz.

Laminate, solid surface and porcelain

Laminate is the budget option: a thin plastic sheet bonded to plywood or MDF, in colors and patterns that can imitate stone or wood. HomeGuide's note on it is blunt, that the surface dulls and scratches easily. Solid surface, of which Corian is the best-known brand, is a blend of natural minerals and acrylic resin formed into a non-porous top, and it comes in more than a hundred colors. Porcelain is also non-porous, but HomeGuide says installers often charge more labor for it because it is fragile and hard to work with.

When Australia banned engineered stone in 2024, it exempted sintered stone and porcelain made without resin. That doesn't make either one a like-for-like swap for quartz, but it explains why they come up in any conversation about it.

Countertop installation: template, fabrication, install

Every stone or quartz top goes through the same three stages in the same order.

1. Once the cabinets are set and level, every edge, corner and cut-out is measured, usually with a physical or digital template. Nothing is cut before this, which is why new cabinets and new counters are always two separate steps.
2. The slab is cut to the template in a shop, the edges are profiled, and the sink and cooktop openings are cut out. This is also where seams are planned. A long run or an L-shape often needs one, as in the photograph, and it is worth asking where it will fall before the slab is cut.
3. The pieces are set on the cabinets, the seams are joined and leveled, an undermount sink is fastened to the underside, and the plumbing is reconnected.

The OSHA and NIOSH alert recommends doing the cutting and finishing in the shop, using templates so that installation needs no finishing on site, and working outdoors with water when an on-site cut can't be avoided. If an installer plans to cut stone inside your house, it is fair to ask how they will keep the dust down.

Countertop installation cost

Countertops are priced by area, then adjusted for edges, cut-outs and the difficulty of the install. These are national figures, opened on September 25, 2026. Neither publisher gives an Aurora price.

Most kitchens carry 30 to 40 square feet of countertop, according to Fixr, which puts a typical replacement at $1,200 to $6,000. Its average job, about 35 square feet of quartz, comes to $3,000. Labor is usually 15 to 30 percent of the total. The edge is where small numbers add up. Fixr lists an eased edge like the one in the photograph as usually included, bevels and bullnoses at $10 to $15 a linear foot extra, mitered and ogee edges at $20 to $25, and a Dupont edge at $20 to $40. It also warns that a heavy material such as granite can need the cabinets reinforced, which adds a few hundred dollars. Fixr adds that extra cut-outs, for a second sink or a dispenser, can raise the installation cost noticeably.

Engineered stone and silica: what the rules say

This is the part of the quartz story that gets garbled most often, so here is what the primary sources say, as of September 25, 2026.

Federal workplace rules set the limit. OSHA's respirable crystalline silica standards, one for construction and one for general industry, cap a worker's exposure at 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air averaged over an eight-hour day, with an action level of 25. OSHA's National Emphasis Program on silica, directive CPL 03-00-023, names engineered stone countertop fabrication as "an emerging hazard that has been associated with several recent outbreaks of severe accelerated silicosis in young workers in the U.S."

Other governments have gone further. California adopted an emergency standard for engineered stone work that took effect on December 29, 2023, followed by a permanent regulation effective February 5, 2025. Australia made it an offense to manufacture, supply, process or install engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs from July 1, 2024.

Colorado has done neither. On September 25, 2026, a search of the Colorado General Assembly's bill records for "silica" returned no bills, and the state health department's site returned nothing on engineered stone. There is no Colorado statute on it.

These rules protect the people who cut and polish the stone. They say nothing either way about a finished countertop sitting in a kitchen, and neither does this page.
